Goal – College-Level Credit
The goal of the Statway Corequisite offering is to provide a one-term, college-level statistics course for all students, with targeted supports built using the Carnegie Math Pathways design principles to provide effective scaffolding for students who need additional support. This offering consists of the one-term, college-level statistics course and a corresponding corequisite component. The corequisite component develops students’ statistical and algebraic reasoning skills in support of the learning outcomes of the college-level statistics course. This offering addresses all the learning outcomes of Statway, and incorporates the same pedagogical strategies.
The college-level course covers all major topics typically addressed in a college-level statistics course. It consists of seven modules:
- Statistical analysis process, data visualization, measures of center, shape, and spread
- Probability, probability distribution, and normal distribution
- Sampling distribution, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing for sample proportions
- Sampling distribution, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing for sample means
- Two-sample tests, ANOVA, and choosing the appropriate test
- Correlation and regression
The corequisite component addresses the foundational concepts and skills necessary for achieving the college-level learning objectives, and is designed to optimize support for the college-level learning objectives when it is needed.
For the college-level component, there is a student workbook (for in-class lessons) and an online homework platform that includes supplemental materials, exercises, and quizzes that support the learning outcomes in each module. Additionally, there is a pool of corequisite resources that correspond to each lesson from which faculty can choose, depending on their desired learning objectives and student needs. The corequisite resources address topics in both statistical and algebraic thinking that relate to the ensuing or prior lesson. These materials also include preparatory lesson materials and review/practice problems.
The college-level component is designed as a 3 transfer-level credit course. The corequisite materials are designed to support a 1, 2, or 3 contact hour corequisite course depending on student and program needs. Corequisite “must have” materials will be labeled to inform the development of 1- or 2-hour corequisite components.
